Yanmar Marine has introduced two more engines in its new generation series of electronic control diesels. The new 6LY3-STP is rated at 440HP (324kW) and the 6LY3-UTP is 380HP (279kW), both at 3,300rpm and measured under conditions defined by ISO 8665 conditions.
These latest engines were introduced at Genoa Boat Show, one month after the first in the new line, the 480HP (353kW) 6LY3-ETP, was shown in public for the first time, at Southampton Boat Show. The completely redesigned, turbocharged, intercooled, wastegated, direct-injection, 24-valve, in-line-six 6LY3 series engines have Yanmar’s new electronic governing system. Exhaust emissions have been reduced significantly.
This new electronic control offers constant power regulation – regardless of fuel temperatures up to 50ºC – and synchronises the engine speeds of twin installations. Yanmar is working on triple-installation synchronisation. The electronic control manages the fuel delivery and injection timing of the high-pressure fuel pump, resulting in more torque and improved fuel economy.
Information from the electronic control system is shown on a multi-function Yanmar LCD display at the helm. Yanmar’s display unit, factory pre-set, provides full run-time engine data, including engine speed percentage load, hours, battery voltage, coolant temperature, fuel usage rate, fuel level (by using an optional fuel sensor), plus boost and oil pressures. There are 16 alarm indicators and an active command window is included. The system allows event sequencing as well. The engines weigh just 640 kilos, providing outstanding power-to-weight benefits. Dimensions are those of a 300HP engine, making the 6LY3 series the most compact diesels in their class. Length is 1,300mm, width 801mm and height 777mm.
A new range of marine transmissions has been developed specifically for these electronic control engines. They can be packaged with these Yanmar by Kanzaki hydraulic KMH series gears, quick and smooth to engage, including an electric trolling feature, and with exceptional torque handling capability. These marine gears are 20% more compact and nearly 20% lighter than the closest competitor.
The 6LY3 series engines displacement is 5.813 litres. They are fully compliant with EPA Tier 2, SAV/BSO Tier 2 excluding mass emission (for 6LY3-ETP), the 6LY3-STP & 6LY3-UTP models will be certified in due course, RCD and IMO requirements.
